Objectives
This course aims to develop students' ability to understand various expressions in Japanese language, analyze deeply a message of the text and convey properly the message of the original text in Portuguese.
Learning outcomes and competences
Students who successfully complete this class will be able to:
- analyze multimedia materials, their semiotic systems and the interaction between the different codes;
- use the most appropriate terminology in an assertive manner most appropriate to the type of translation for subtitling, dubbing, audio description, translation and web localization;
- detect the type of register and language properly and transfer messages using the same type of register of the source language;
- justify each choice taken;
- carefully select and make effective use of the multiple resources: information provided by experts in different fields, the Internet, databases, CAT tools, electronic corpora, Machine Translation.

Since students attending this curricular unit have a limited linguistic level of Japanese (Level B1), this course seeks to develop in students the skills that will allow them to better understand audio and written texts in Japanese and translate relatively short multimedia material.
The activities undertaken in this course favor the development of linguistic, intercultural, translational, technological and synthesis skills.
1. Introduction of tools, terminology and translation itself of multimedia, making use of the materials taught in complete command of the metalanguage.
2. Specificities of multimedia products, particularly the interaction of different semiotic systems and the limitations of each support.
3. Preparation and presentation of case studies: methods and resources in subtitling and audio description.
5. Manipulation of interactive computer products for subtitling used in translation.

Teaching methods and learning activities
While attending classes, students will train their Japanese listening comprehension ability, by transcribing spoken texts. They will then translate the transcribed texts from Japanese to Portuguese, using multiple information sources, including web pages and online dictionaries. The text (type, style and register) and every sentence (grammatical structure) will be analyzed during other classes. Individual and group projects will be develop with presentations to support and justify the choices made, and problems and remedies will be discussed.
Each piece of work will be revised by the lecturer and presented in class, and the corrections will be analysed and comments and suggestions received.
