Objectives

The objective of the subject is to provide students with introductory knowledge in the area of German culture and literature from the Middle Ages until the 19th century.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students should be able to:

  •                Reflect upon the concepts of German culture and society in the period between the Middle Ages and the 19th century;
  •                Comprehend the social conditions of courtly literature;
  •                Understand the different ways of approaching medieval literary text;
  •                Identify the different literary periods in the German Middle Ages;
  •                Identify the different literary genres during the German Middle Ages;

Analyse a literary text, taking into account the aesthetic specificities of the period in which it was produced.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Classes will be student-centered, stimulating the sensibility to understand the medieval literary text.

An attempt will be made to favour individual research, critical thinking and problem solving, avoiding the lecture.

Main attention is given to the active participation in class, by submitting small projects.

Evaluation: distributed,( i.e, based on the work done in class), with final exam.
