Objectives

The unit course German B2.2 will enable the learners of German to achieve a knowledge grade for the B2 level (independent user, level 2) such as indicated in the Common European Framework of Reference in the four basic language skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing. The students should be able to: build on theirs existing knowledge of vocabulary and grammar, develop presentation skills in German on a wide range of current affair themes; develop the ability to express opinions on a range of topics, including specific training in the art of producing argumentative texts, as well as summaries; read and understand articles concerned with contemporary problems; acquire skills to systematically command of relevant idioms, vocabulary and grammatical structures both receptively and productively; extend their interest in different social and cultural realities.

Learning outcomes and competences

Based on the curricular unit’s intended learning outcomes teaching methodologies adopted in classes will consolidate students’ receptive and productive skills in the German language and make them engage in a range of different activities, focusing on reading and understanding complex themes on current affairs. This entails a command of technical vocabulary and the ability to present and support different viewpoints on an independent level. Therefore, the teaching methodology will follow a communicative based approach, consolidating receptive and productive competences and aiming at learner’s independence by means of a creative/constructive process. To build on theirs existing knowledge of German, including vocabulary, reading and writing skills, the teaching methodology strives for students’ constant contact with authentic materials, focusing on the learning and practical use of technical vocabulary. This will be followed by relevant assessment items such as practical activities and/or the written tests. To develop the presentation skills in German on a wide range of current affairs themes, students will take part in debates and oral presentations in class, which demand putting forward a clear view supported by arguments. To further develop learner’s ability to express opinions on a range of topic, the teaching methodologies will clear focuse on the written production of argumentative texts (presentation and support of a thesis). Oral and written tests permit teacher and students to check progress in reviewing of existing knowledge and in the acquisition of new content.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

This course assumes familiarity with the contents of the level B2.1.

Program

This course provides students with previous knowledge of German a deepening and development of the skills learned in the first semester (B2.1). The learning rhythm will now accelerate to a more autonomous and intense level. Departing from current affairs, more specific texts will be focussed (from the jobworld). Several grammatical aspects approached in B2.1 will be a matter of reflection: tenses and moods, passive and active voice, and subordinate clauses. Students will develop the linguistic skills (both oral and writing) to apply for a job or a study grant. Further, they should produce clear and detailed text explaining a viewpoint on a topical issue and giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Teaching methods and learning activities

he communicative approach and different teaching strategies will involve the integration of different language skills, which should be used throughout the course, so as to make authentic and meaningful communication the goal of classroom activities. Students are guided to make German language learning a process of creative construction. The type of assessment is the distributed evaluation without final exam, which will stimulate regular participation, offering a regular analysis on the process of acquiring competences. This mode of assessment implies an active and continuous participation in class, self-study, engagement and delivering of the proposed works. Linguistic-pragmatic and sociolinguistic skills, developed in both comprehension and oral interaction, as interpretation of written texts and textual production will be evaluated through oral communications and written tests according to the CEFR (oral assessment 50%, writing tests 50%). In classes they should interact exclusively in German.
