Teaching language

English

Objectives

The study of the dramatic achievement of William Shakespeare and his contemporaries through a short selection of plays made according to a general thematic reference. The apprehension by students of the aesthetic dimension and the creative flexibility of the English language at a crucial stage of its historical and literary fixation. The familiarity with the work of important Elizabethan dramatists and the development of critical approaches, stimulating the reading of English Renaissance drama in its literary and spectacular expression.

Learning outcomes and competences

Knowledge of the plays through analysis, interpretation and discussion. Knowledge of their historical and literary contexts.

Working method

Presencial

Program

Human agency and divine ordinance in Doctor Faustus, by Christopher Marlowe, Measure for Measure and King Lear, by William Shakespeare, and The Duchess of Malfi, by John Webster. Reading and discussion include basic issues concerning analysis and interpretation: language, form and meaning, speech and character, the configuration of dramatic action and its relevant structural balance and parallels, or the interrogative nature of the plays and creative tensions established between representation and persuasive textual intention.
