Students will acquire, practise and develop the methodological skills needed to produce research work in modern history. The end result of this research will take the form of a scientific report.

A. SEMINARS 1. Presentation of the recent lines of research in Modern History of Portugal – proposed topics for a research paper 2. Construction phases of scientific knowledge in History – from the collection of information to preparing the project report 3. Instruments and mechanisms to search for information in archives, libraries, document centres and online databases 4. Methods and techniques for collecting and analysing information - Work instruments 4.1. Reading factsheets 4.2. Methods of literature review B. PL CLASSES (Practical and laboratory) Field work in information retrieval spaces C. TUTORIALS Monitoring of work in progress 1. Presentation, by students, of projects and preliminary research results 2. In-class discussion of research paths 3. Monitoring of work in progress
Seminars will be devoted to the following activities: presentation and discussion of concepts, research methods and analysis, and debates on the problems arising from ongoing students’ research. Practical classes will be devoted to field work, research in public and private archives, libraries, museums, documentation centres. They will also be used to tutor students in their ongoing research projects.

Mandatory 75% attendance of classes, a requirement for assessment, will be controlled by means of attendance records.

The improvement of final grades is obtained through the review of the assessment components considered not satisfactory.
