Objectives

In today's globalised and highly publicised world, the in-depth knowledge of international conflicts and of the phenomena underlying their coverage by the press represents a significant attribute for students graduating in journalism and communication sciences. Focused on the comparative study of the media coverage of key contemporary international conflicts, the primary aim of this subject is to motivate students to reflect on the evolution of the role and performance of the media in this field, in order to promote a better understanding of the tensions, contradictions, constraints and prevailing contingencies in the news coverage during periods of war. This subject addresses and examines, mainly from the press viewpoint, the role of the media in international crises and/or conflicts since the Vietnam War up to the Iraq war in 2003. This historical path will provide information on the techniques adopted by the national and international organisations to influence the media role before, during and after the event. By addressing several case studies and many method of analysis, students will be able to identify and examine critically some of the most relevant concepts and topics related to the news coverage of recent conflicts: the influence of censorship and propaganda or ‘public diplomacy’, the increasing predominance of public relations techniques by government and military authorities, among others.
