Objectives

It is expected that students acquire a detailed knowledge of the specific period. That they are aware of the different perspectives concerning historiographical issues addressed in the course.It is expected that they acquire the ability to use accurate  terminology and concepts regarding this period’s social and economic history. The goals of this subject will be presented and discussed at the beginning of the semester.

1. The age of Discovery and expansion; 1.1 Portuguese and European expansions; 1.2 Impact of the expansion in Portugal. 2. Economic background; 2.1 Production: the weight of the agricultural economy; 2.2 Trades and communications; 2.3 The administrative division, powers and economy; 3. The structure of the Portuguese society in the modern period; 3.1 Social stratification and mobility possibilities; 3.2 Social representation forms.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Tutorial supervision seeks to support individual and group learning in order to build a bridge between the exposition of ideas and knowledge and the reflexion around them, bearing in mind the information resources. For that purpose, there will be reading and comment exercises, small essays about several issues and a first critical approach to documental sources.
