Objectives

Students who successfully complete this module will:
1. become familiar with the research methods and techniques used in medieval history and develop the skills needed to produce a research report;
2. have a good knowledge of the most recent topics and bibliographic references in medieval history
3. be able to produce a research report on a topic in Medieval History.

Assessment
- Successful completion of intermediate tasks as stipulated by coordinators (selection of topic; presentation of research project, etc.)
- 20- to 50-page research report;
- presentation of the research report before a committee (20-30 minutes of presentation and discussion). The report must be handed in before the end of the 1st week in the regular exam period.

Program

“The Ages of the Middle”: topics, methods, and issues.
1.Introduction: basic concepts in Medieval History
2. Research and Work Methodologies
2.1. Time and space: chronologies and maps of the medieval period.
2.2.The main printed and manuscript sources (Portuguese and foreign archives and the most important document and published sources collections)

2.3 Main research tools

2.4 How to write a research paper:
a. Selecting the topic
b. Organising the paper
c. Collecting and processing information
d. Collecting bibliography and reading
e. Writing and presenting the paper
3. Processing sources: selecting and analysing document and narrative sources.
4. Help with individual reports.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures and practical classes. Guidance will be provided in the following areas: researching information sources, creating databases, analysing and processing information, and writing research reports.

Eligibility for exams

75% class attendance (unless established otherwise by law - See article 9 in the Assessment Regulations).

Calculation formula of final grade

- Research report - 75%
- Public presentation of the research report - 15%
- Two intermediate assessments - 10% (5% + 5%).
All students must do all assessments mentioned above.
