Objectives

Sensitise students to the most significant cultural movements in the contemporary West.
Understand and interpret the main cultural manifestations and mental strands of contemporary age.
To draw the students' attention to the main ideological and cultural movements of the Portuguese society, from the rise of Liberalism to the end of "Estado Novo".
Using contexts to compare Portugal´s cultural tendencies and mentality with other European countries.
Improve proficiency in concepts and establish links between them.
To acquire independent learning strategies and to develop interpretation and critical analysis skills.

Program

1. Subject presentation: teaching methodologies, assessment options and criteria, sources and bibliography.
2. From the Enlightenment and critical thought to the Romanticism as a cultural revolution - the changing paradigm in Europe and in Portugal.
3. Cultural movements in the 2nd half of the 19th century and the relationship between philosophy, art and science.
4. Positivism and Republicanism in Portugal.
5. “Fin-de-siècle” culture in the westwern world.
6. The inter-war period – cultural, ideological and behavioural transformations in western society.
7. The Portuguese culture during the First Republic – changing, plurality and diversity.
8. The Portuguese culture during the "Estado Novo" – from cultural policies to cultural resistance.
