Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this class will be able to:

• Identify and relate the main concepts in the theory and practice of industrial translation
• Understand the evolution of the relation between technology and translation
• Identify the various forms of computer assisted translation technologies
• Discuss the practical applications of the different translation and localization technologies
• Use computer assisted translation tools as well as localization tools in small-scale software and website localization projects
• Discuss the role and interaction of the participants in a localization project

1 – Evolution of language theory and the language industry
Interlinguistic communication and the language industry
• The agents in the language industry: clients, users, translators, etc.
• Fundamental concepts of computer assisted translation
• Development of computer assisted translation technologies
• Main features and evolution of the concept of localization

2 - Computer Assisted Translation (CAT)
a. CAT tools: potentials and limitations
- Data management with CAT tools
- Stored data: alignments
- Data systematization: terminological databases
- Software localization with CAT tools

b. Practical exercises: software localization using SDL Trados / SDLX

3 – Localization: Problems and solutions

- Engineering and language: conflicts and complementarities
