Objectives

The objectives for the 2nd semester are as follows:
(A) to practise & perfect English for different contexts, and for different purposes & functions, both academic and work-related, through the study and analysis of a range and variety of different texts, articles and genres; (B) to promote and encourage greater development of independent study and learning.
By the end of the 2nd semester, students should:
(a) have a greater understanding of grammar at text level and be able to use grammatical structures effectively and appropriately;
(b) have enhanced their reading/writing skills for academic, employment & 'real world' purposes;
(c) have extended their vocabulary range and be able to deploy such vocabulary effectively for
appropriate contexts, using suitable collocation & idiom, etc.
(d) have studied various text types - e.g. academic & business articles, and have practised writing using appropriate register and style;
(e) be able to use various corpora sites competently;
(f) have honed study & self-access skills so as to take more responsibility for own learning;
(g) be able to deduce & discuss effectively, from a study of texts, writer's intended purpose & meaning, effectiveness of grammatical structures used, overall efficacy of the text under scrutiny;
(h) have extended knowledge of the English speaking world e.g. socio-cultural knowledge, appreciation of cultural diversity, etc.

Program

(1) Themes: relevant & contemporary topics + articles & texts related to these. Intercultural similarities & differences will be compared.
(2) Grammar study: an inductive/descriptive, rather than prescriptive, approach will be pursued, closely paralled to text analysis/study & writing skills.
(3) Skills work will comprise READING (text analysis & comparison) and WRITING (via regular homework assignments & class work).
(4) Practice will be given in writing Academic English.
(5) Writing may include summarising & précis writing, and revising & proof-reading of short texts & articles.
(6)The SPEAKING component will comprise class discussions (and an oral presentation depending on class size), and tutorial discussion of assignments written by students.
(7) Extensive vocabulary work will be undertaken, concentrating particularly on collocation, idiom, and lexical chunking.
