Objectives

By the end of the 1st semester of the Master course, students should have reached the level C1.1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR) in all skills (oral comprehension, reading, conversation and writing).
Therefore, by the end of the semester, students should be able:
1. to express themselves in different (professional and academic) situations, orally and in written text, and to choose the appropriate register, according to the situation or the context;
2. to recognize different text types and to produce them actively;
3. to express themselves with improved grammatical correctness and lexical differentiation according to the specific situation;
4. to understand (extracts of) specialized texts in German language and to reproduce/summarize the contents;
5. to express themselves orally in different communicative situations, with expanded knowledge in vocabulary and increased fluency;
6. to retrieve and process information from different text types in the German language, in order to produce and present written work for academic purposes;
7. to use appropriate learning strategies and to overcome existing problems;

Program

Oral and written understanding:
The students will achieve a greater understanding of text and discourse level, even without being familiar with the explicit context. They will also learn to understand long and complex technical texts, articles and literary texts and recognize different kinds of styles and registers.
Oral and written production of texts and communicative interaction:
Students will learn to express themselves orally with fluency in the German language and to express their ideas and opinions in a precise way and to respond appropriately to oral contributions of other students.
Furthermore, during the semester they will practice how to choose the appropriate text style and register according to the text they are writing and to express their ideas clearly and in a structured way.
Themes:
Besides the themes focussed in the book (lesson 1-5) others will be chosen according to students’ later professional activity. Moreover, some texts about the culture of German speaking countries will be read in order to compare cultural peculiarities.
Text types:
Encyclopaedia article, description (persons, fotos, paintings), business and personal letter, Curriculum Vitae und job application forms, comments, “Erörterung”, literary texts.
Students will read a literary text during the semester which will be
the subject of the oral or written tests.
Grammar:
Grammar from the book (lesson 1-5):
conjunctions for main clauses and subordinate clauses; use of the Genitive (with and without preposition); Modal verbs from a contrastive perspective; revision of use and meaning of the prepositions.
Students are expected to work autonomously to remedy individual problems. They are also expected to prepare presentations and to collaborate in group projects.
