Objectives

Although being, in historical terms, a relatively recent feature, International Organizations present themselves, nowadays, as major players in the international arena.

In the large area of International Organizations, and concerning our interests as individuals and as a sovereign State, particular attention must be focused on the European Union and on the United Nations. The European Union already fits much of the essence of our lives, as elements (individuals and legal entities, public and private) belonging to one of its Member States. The United Nations Organization, on the other hand, has been tailored so to be the mainstay of the Global Order of Post-World War II and, with greater or lesser difficulty of asserting its centrality, remains the great reference point around which the States aspire to achieve and maintain this World Order.

With a distinctive attention to the European Union and the United Nations Organization, this Course aims at emphasizing the institutional structure and the action of International Organizations, providing the students with the basic knowledge data regarding these major international players. It aims also at contributing, in a interdisciplinary framework, for developing the capacity for reflection and critical analysis, in the knowledge of the principal features of contemporary International Organizations, developing a culture of citizenship and international awareness.

Eligibility for exams

Under the "Regulamento de Avaliação da FLUP", the evaluation method includes a pre-requisite compliance with the attendance, considering that a student meets the attendance "if, having been duly enrolled, does not exceed the maximum number of faults corresponding to 25% of classes provided" (Article 9). To obtain approval, students must obtain "a final mark of 10 points" (Article 5). "All students enrolled and who meet the requirements set out in the schedule of the course" have access to regular season and the time for appeal (Article 11).

Calculation formula of final grade

The evaluation method takes in account the high amount of students. The final mark is calculated in accordance with Article 5 of the "Regulamento de Avaliação da FLUP".
