Program

TRANSATLANTIC DIALOGUES IN 19TH CENTURY LITERATURE
It starts by a close study of historical, cultural and aesthetic backgrounds on both sides of the Atlantic and is followed by a cross reading of authors and texts.
Jane Austen's 'Emma' and Charlotte Bronte's 'Jane Eyre' will be the first to draw our attention. While it is only in the twentieth century, with Daphne du Maurier's ' Rebecca' that we do find evidence of influence of Charlotte Bronte's ' Jane Eyre' in Great Britain, in America it is different. Louisa May Alcott's 'Little Women' is the first target of this english-american connection. We hope to draw the main aspects of the complex influence ' Jane Eyre' had upon creative women in America after 1870.
