Objectives
Although this course builds on previously acquired theoretical premises, it is essentially of a practical nature and aimed at:
1) developing students’ general knowledge and knowledge of specific areas, while cultivating a certain curiosity for what is going on in the world around them;
2) raising students’ awareness towards the different types of text and the various implications, past and present, involved in the process of translating;
3) drawing students’ awareness to the many demands and difficulties translators come up against in their working sphere;
4) familiarising students with useful translating tools: dictionaries (Monolingual, Bilingual, Technical, Multilingual, Synonyms, Proverbs, etc.), encyclopaedias, and other reference books, glossaries, databases and Internet sites;
5) equipping students with basic translating techniques and giving them the opportunity to exercise these by discussing and translating a wide variety of text types;
6) getting students used to working at a quick and effortless pace and to always have a critical attitude towards their translation, as well as getting them used to working individually and/or in a group;
7) developing students’ knowledge of both the foreign and the mother language, above all when considering the precision and word management involved in translating;
8) contributing to the development of students’ capacities to produce correct, clear, coherent and precise texts that are in the appropriate register and are written in clear and accurate Portuguese.
Program
Translation: discussion of the concept:
1) the translator: role, difficulties, limitations, status, responsibilities and duties within the translating profession;
2) different types of language, different registers and different forms of translating according to the text type and target audience – analysis of translated texts with the aim of identifying and evaluating translation techniques;
3) strategies used by the translator to solve difficulties – analysis of texts in English and their translations in Portuguese. Definition of adequate translation techniques; detection and discussion of linguistic and translating problems at all levels (lexical, morph-syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, historical and cultural) in accordance with the text types;
4) exercises in the use of ordinary and more specific/technical dictionaries and encyclopaedias. Using the Internet to select trustworthy and pertinent information; research activities in different areas and domains so that the students obtain a certain degree of working autonomy; elaboration of a glossary in a specialized area;
5) a closer look at provisional versions and writing of final versions of translations – correction of translated texts;
6) editing and post-editing of texts done by automatic translation.
