Objectives

By the end of the semester students should be able to:
- Interpret main guidelines of political developments in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries;
- Relate events, timelines and circumstances;
- Interpret and contextualize authors and texts;
- Discuss historiographical interpretations in this area.

Program

1. Politics, political history and contemporaneity.
2. Time of revolutions: the American Revolution, the French Revolution,… Western Revolution? Historical frames and directions of a long historiographical controversy.
3. Legitimism, nations and nationalisms. The European diplomatic balance and extra-European cases.
4. Liberalism as a political and social system.
5. The European expansionism and colonialism: rivalries and confrontations. The anti-colonialism.
6. The labor movement.
7. The ideological alternative: the socialism.
8. The social doctrine of the Catholic Church and its political role.
9. The First World War: the beginning of the "total wars".
10. The crisis of liberalism and ideological clashes: democracies and totalitarian regimes. Conservatism and fascism. The Russian Revolution, the USSR and the role of Sovietism.
11. World War II.
12. The "cold war" and the bipolar world. Democracies and the postwar welfare state.
13. The anti-colonialism and decolonization. The Third World. Local conflicts.
14. The construction of Europe. The implosion of the Soviet bloc.
15. Globalization. Present questions.
