Objectives

Students are required to:
- Know how the European idea developed and the role of history in its awareness;
- Identify and grasp the reasons that led to the emergence of the earliest forms of association of European countries after the 2nd World War;
- Understand the importance of creating the European Coal and Steel Community, how it works and its institutions, as well as the repercussions of the failed European Defence Community.
- Recognise the importance of the Treaty of Rome, the Single European Act, the Maastricht Treaty and of the subsequent agreements on European Integration, as well as the enlargements of 2004 and 2007, the meaning of the European Constitution and the importance of the Lisbon Treaty.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theory-practical classes: Introduction and explanation of the programme contents, to prompt discussions among students. At the same time, and whenever possible, statistical and map graphs will be used.
- In tutorials, the lecturer will seek a critical approach and the discussion of programme contents, raising discussions students, moderated by the lecturer. Promote the discussion of relevant bibliography and of the book reviews or reviews of parts of books done by the student in the course of their autonomous work. Students will also be allowed to choose the books, provided they are accepted by the lecturer.
- The book review to be presented, however, will relate to one of the works suggested in a list to be given by the lecturer.

Classification improvement

The process for improving grades must comply with the types of assessment planned for the course unit. Students may redo or repeat the test or tests in which they have failed to achieve a satisfactory grade.

Observations

Lectures will always be in Portuguese. However, tutorials may be instructed in English, French, Spanish or Italian for foreign students whose mother-tongue is not Portuguese, and have obvious poor comprehension skills.
