Objectives

This course unit is designed for students to read and understand the different types of representations of the Other and the mode of re-construction at the time of reading. The aim is to provide students with analysis tools for both travel literature and fictional literature in which travel is a constitutive element.

Program

Travel literature and travels in literature:
1) Travels in the 1920’s and 1930’s: Clärenore Stinnes, Annemarie Schwarzenbach and Margret Boveri.
2) Travel literature by Wolfgang Koeppen, Alfred Andersch, Hugo Loetscher, Christian Kracht.
3) Fictional travels: "Homo Faber" by Max Frisch and "1979" by Christian Kracht.

Complementary bibliography will be provided throughout the semester.
