Objectives

This course aims at making the student familiar with problems and solutions involved in the translation of diverse literary genres and modes as well as of diverse period styles.

Program

The course of study will be directed at a set of English and American literary texts comprising different genres, modes and styles, with especial attention to translation problems related to metre and prosody, as well as to stylistic and rhetorical processes connected with distinct cultural formations. The selection of texts will as far as possible take into account the availability of Portuguese translations, in order that these may be used as a starting-point and discussion subject for the study to be developed
This study will be followed along with an analysis of English and American critical texts that have been important in the history of genres and in the establishment of literary taste.
