Objectives
The History and Theory of Cinema aims to instil in students a careful and specific awareness of the world of cinema, without forgetting, however, that we have to bring into the cultural world in which it is produced, and more specifically in the field of modern and contemporary visual culture, where it has played a leading role and still has a influential existence. The intention is that this awareness is not merely “second hand”, based on theories and comments of others, thus enabling students to start from their own reception of the films and images and from being aware of their subjective presence in the cultural field. As such, students will have to confront films and images directly and personally.
Program
1- The cinema and the images.
. The cinema as a decisive element in the emergence and development of the current “image culture” and as (unconscious) leader of the contemporary imagery world.
. The contemporary “world of images” (the audiovisual included) as a field of cinema “genetic” matrix expansion and as the field of disintegration of the cinema’s own specificity.
2 -The cinema and its images.
. Understanding the characteristics of cinema as a mode of articulating heterogeneous elements (image and sound), reality and fiction, rupture and healing, the whole and the parts, ...)
. Confluent/ Divergent
. Colour / Black and white
. Silent / Noisy
. Fast / Slow
. Linear / Discontinuous
. Light / Shadow
. Outside / Inside
