Objectives
We seek that the students acquire a detailed knowledge of this specific period. They will be prepared for the program’s new historiographical perspectives, hoping they will acquire the capacity of using accurate terminology and concepts regarding this period’s social and economical history. The goals of this subject, together with its basic theories and methods, will be presented and discussed with the students in the beginning of the semester.

1. The age of Discovery and expansion;
1.1 Portuguese and European expansions;
1.2 Impact of the expansion in Portugal.
2. Economic background;
2.1 Production: the weight of the agricultural economy;
2.2 Trades and communications;
2.3 The administrative division, powers and economy;
3. The structure of the Portuguese society in the modern period;
3.1 Social stratification and mobility possibilities;
3.2 Social representation forms.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Tutorial supervision seeks to support individual and group learning in order to build a bridge between the exposition of ideas and knowledge and the reflexion around them, bearing in mind the information resources. For that purpose, there will be reading and comment exercises, small essays about several issues and a first critical approach to documental sources.

Eligibility for exams
Attendance at classes will be registered in attendance sheets. Students dismissed from mandatory attendance, given their special status, shall contact the teacher in the beginning of the semester.
Calculation formula of final grade
Critical review: 30%
Essay: 35%
Revision: 35%
Examinations or Special Assignments
For students with special needs, and according to FLUP’s Evaluation Rules, there may be a special test, where they can assess their knowledge about the subject’s program.

It is not applied. The indications for these students are the same as the ones indicated in the subject’s general evaluation mode.
