Objectives

At the end of the semester students are expected to:
- Have acquired a sound understanding of North American colonization;
- Identify the reasons that led to the independence of the 13 English colonies of North America as well as of this new country’s political organization;
- Understand the process and importance of expansion Westward and the causes of the Civil War, namely the issue of slavery;
- Relate the post-Civil War period with the reconstruction and industrialization of the United States of America, which transformed the country and made it a major 20th-century world power.

Program

1. The English colonization of North America.
2. The American Revolution and the independence of the United States. A new nation.
3. The expansion towards the west. The reformist movements. The Secession War (1861-1865).
4. Reconstruction and industrialization.
