Cycles of Study/Courses
Objectives
It is this subject’s purpose to provide students with general notions on Portuguese Medieval culture, from the period prior to the birth of the nation to the 16th century. The course will focus not only on erudite culture but also on themes associated with "popular" culture, analysing the different tendencies in cultural evolution in early modern Portugal.
Program
1. Introduction: «before Portugal» - cultural influences.
1.1 The origins of Portuguese cultural life: Orosius, S. Martin of Dumio/Braga, S. Fructuosus).
1.2 Geography of monastic Portugal (10th and 11th centuries).
1.3 Formation of dioceses and cultural consequences.
2. The first Portuguese Middle Ages (11th - 13th century).
2.1 A perspective of the teaching system: monastic and episcopal schools.
2.2 The culture of the Troubadours.
3. The late Middle Ages (14th-15th century [first quarter])
3.1 The University.
3.2 The culture of the court.
3.2.1 Libraries, books and readings.
3.2.2 The development of the chronicles.
3.2.3 Doctrinal prose.
3.3 Political thought.
4. Varia
4.1 Pilgrimages and sanctuaries.
4.2 Theatre before Gil Vicente.

Formal exposition of subject-matters comprised in the programme, offering discussion and analysis of some of the most relevant texts.
Evaluation Type
Eligibility for exams
In order to pass this subject, students must achieve 9,5 marks or above (on a scale from 0 to 20 marks) in the final exam or in the mark calculated from the average sum of the marks obtained in the exam and in the submitted assignment.
Calculation formula of final grade
For students who have opted for submitting an assignment, the final mark will be based on the average sum of the mark obtained in the exam (counting for 50%) and that obtained in the assignment (counting for another 50%).
Examinations or Special Assignments
Besides the final exam, no other assessment tasks are required to pass this subject.
