Objectives

- To interpret the major guidelines in the history of modern and contemporary economic models and societies.
- To analyze the situations of rupture or continuity in the economic and social dynamics of the 19th and 20th century.

Program

1. - The liberal economic order: new economic and social configurations of the 19th century.
1.1 - The problems experienced by the population.
1.2 – The resources.
1.3 - Technology and its diffusion: energy, mechanization, transports.
1.4 - Institutional structure (norms, the State, social groups).
1.5 - Agricultural production, industrial production, exchanges.
1.6 - Industrialization patterns (advanced countries; least developed countries).
1.7 - Currency, banking.
1.8 - Crises and economic fluctuations.
1.9- Economic policies.

2. - World War I and the beginning of the «great transformation».
2.1 - Economic and social consequences of the «great war».
2.2 - The Soviet revolution and its implications in the global order.
2.3 - Social tensions: the consequences of totalitarianisms.
2.4 – Market fragmentation: the tendency to autarchy.
2.5 - The 1929 crisis, the «great depression», the national responses.

3. - World War II and the reorganisation of the world-economy.
3.1 - Post-war economic reconstruction: the effects of the Marshall Plan.
3.2 - The Welfare State, the «golden years» and mass consumption.
3.3 - The bipolar world and the economic blocks: the Common Market. The Comecon.
3.4 - Economic development and underdevelopment. The Third World.
3.5 - The integration of economies. The Economic European Community.
3.6 - The 1974 crisis, post-Fordism, globalization and the limits to growth.
