Resumo (PT): Europa nos últimos três séculos, não obstante o surgimento do fenómeno do nacionalismo cultural, e as cogitações dos intelectuais a propósito da ¿cultura europeia¿. Esta questão tem sido valorizada no quadro da União Europeia, que simultaneamente visa promover as singularidades identitárias nacionais, numa equação complexa que pretende compatibilizar a diversidade na unidade. Colocam-se, pois, ao presente, desafios que vão da demanda da ¿alma europeia¿ ao fomento do diálogo intercultural, assentes na convicção de que a cultura constitui um fator de comunhão indispensável à ¿casa europeia¿.

Abstract (EN): This paper begins by proposing a reflection on culture as a form of European unity in the last three centuries, notwithstanding the emergence of the phenomenon of cultural nationalism, and the cogitations on the subject of ¿European culture¿. This issue has been valued in the framework of the European Union, which simultaneously seeks to promote national identity singularities, in a complex equation that seeks to make diversity compatible with the unity. Present challenges range from the demand of the ¿European soul¿ to the promotion of intercultural dialogue, considering that culture is an indispensable factor of communion in the ¿European house¿.
