Subject:
Oxidized xanthan gum, natural adhesives, agglomerated cork, chitosan
Abstract (EN):
Oxidized xanthan gum at two different aldehyde contents was synthesized to produce a natural adhesive when cross-linked with chitosan. Due to the reactivity of the aldehyde groups present on oxidized xanthan gum, the cross-linking with chitosan is more efficient creating a high quality and water resistant adhesive. The modification of xanthan gum was characterized by FTIR and 1H NMR, and the degree of oxidation was determined by the hydroxylamine hydrochloride method. The combination of oxidized xanthan gum with chitosan revealed better adhesive properties with less swelling than individual polymers or the mixture of xanthan gum (no oxidation) with chitosan. This adhesive was optimized to be used in cork laminates.
