Resumo (PT): O "Espaço Schengen" nasceu por razões que, em boa medida, contribuíram também para a consagração da cooperação reforçada da União Europeia, nelas avultando as discrepâncias entre Estados-Membros. O Tratado de Lisboa veio proceder à "comunitarização" do "espaço de liberdade, segurança e justiça" (última configuração do correspondente ao "Espaço Schengen"). Mas as dificuldades que têm assolado alguns Estados-Membros do "Espaço Schengen", impossibilitados de cumprir satisfatoriamente os seus deveres de participantes, levam a uma questão teórica: será de equacionar um recurso ao mecanismo da cooperação reforçada, para tentar resolver este "nó górdio"?

Abstract (EN): The "Schengen Area" was born due to reasons that also contributed, in a large extent, to the consecration of the enhanced cooperation of the European Union, namely discrepancies among Member States. The Treaty of Lisbon proceeded to the "communitarisation" of the "area of freedom, security and justice" (last configuration of the correspondent to the "Schengen Area"). But the difficulties which have plagued some Member States of the "Schengen Area", unable to duly fulfill their obligations as participants, leads to a theoretical question: should the enhanced cooperation mechanism be considered for trying to solve such problems?
