The Centre for Research and Intervention in Education (CIIE), established by Stephen R. Stoer and colleagues in 1988 at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Porto, is a research centre funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
Regular research activities are organised into four research groups: (RG1) Politics, Policies and Participation; (RG2) Education, Knowledge and Contexts of Work and Education; (RG3) Citizenship, Diversity and Historical Knowledge; and (RG4) Innovation, Creativity and Local Development in Education.
The research carried out at CIIE includes educational issues, with emphasis on dimensions related to educational and social inequalities and exclusions, in line with the goals of the European Union and the Council of Europe for the 'promotion of equity, social cohesion and active citizenship' and with the goals of 'Europe 2020' for sustainable and inclusive growth. There are several funded research projects underway at the Centre, some with strong international cooperation and funding, and focusing on, among other topics, curricular and pedagogical innovation, educational and institutional assessment, training of human action and professional development, deafness and cultures, health education, and the analysis of educational and social policies. CIIE has also been recognised for its wide involvement in scientific research projects focused on issues of inter and multicultural education, gender studies and ethnic minorities, and educational and cultural heritage.
Currently, the Centre has 40 integrated members with a Ph.D. degree, three of whom has been hired under the Programa Ciência FCT initiative, and 60 cooperating members: 30 are doctoral fellows and 14 are research fellows from funded projects. In 2012-2013, CIIE also hosted 35 internships for integration in research, awarded, through competition, to students in the 1st and 2nd cycles in Educational Sciences.
Through the merging of contributions from a diversity of areas, the research team brings together researchers from Educational Sciences, Sociology, Social Work, History, Psychology, and Medicine, among others, and professionals involved in social-educational issues.
The concerns with the diffusion of knowledge, expanding the dialogue with society, have led to the creation of an editorial line, which incorporates the journal Education, Society & Cultures, which is a peer reviewed academic journal that is now multilingual. It also integrates a set of works that aim at disseminating the results of some of the activities of the Centre and their researchers - projects and scientific meetings and academic works of recognised quality - which may be relevant to the educational field.
In recent years, the Centre has invested heavily in increasing its publications in international journals, so that the knowledge produced may benefit from a more globalised distribution and debate. CIIE members have also been invited by many international journals to be part of their editorial boards, to organise special issues and to evaluate scientific papers. These are visible manifestations of a growing international recognition.
