Rationale:
Near the city of Porto where U.P. is located two areas have been object in the recent past of quite a lot of attention from the University:
1. The contact between two of the main structural units of Iberian Peninsula "Zona Centro-Ibérica" and "Zona de Ossa-Morena", is constituted by the Shear Zone Porto/Tomar. It passes thought the littoral area comprised between the cities of Espinho e Vila do Conde and is present under the city of Porto. In this zone a large variety of contacts between three main units, "Complexo Xisto-Grauváquico Ante-Ordovícico" and two different types of granite, one Carbonic and the other one Cambric exist. Still now there is a large field for speculation concerning the shape and behaviour of the contacts between these formations.
2. South and South East of Valongo several mineralizations in Au occur. Some of them are linked to shear zones that have a close connection with the Recarei granite. Other mineralizations correspond to volumes of Silurian and Ordovician meta-sediments folded in rootless folds. The tectonics is of Carbonic age.
3. The Geology Department of Faculty of Sciences and the Mine Department of Faculty of Engineering decided to unit efforts and equipments to obtain a better understanding of the features described under nº 1. Joint fieId work is planned for this purpose using the undergraduate students of both institutions and it is scheduled for the end of second semester and for Summer 2007. For this purpose two proton magnetometers will be used, one of them working in gradient mode. The data gathering points will be located using GPS apparatus. Also a surveying of all fractures with detailed aerial photography will be done together with directional provided a kite and photo apparatus will be used.
4. In the zone described under nº 2 a campaign of geological exploration is currently being done by Beralt Tin and Wolfram Co, that detected several interesting occurrence |

4. In the zone described under nº 2 a campaign of geological exploration is currently being done by Beralt Tin and Wolfram Co, that detected several interesting occurrences of Gold. They include quite a number of exploratory drills with sampling. For both mining and geology undergraduates it is a very thrilling experience to participate in a geophysical exploration activity with this type of applicability. Thus the promoters of the project decide also, if time will be enough to extend the magnetic exploration to this area.
5. Also a campaign of aerial photography is included. The photos will be taken from a man manned kite equiped with a digital camera with remote control (to be built) and afterwards assembled in a mosaic using the correspondent image software. The statistical analysis of the facture pattern will be made through the MatLab Statistical Toolbox.
6. The final report will be done taking in consideration features number 3 and 5. |
