Summary: |
This Project aims to broaden the understanding of the political, institutional, social and economic history of the Douro Valley region, as well as its relations with Porto, thus giving continuity to research conducted previous by the different members of the research team. To this end, the following lines of research are to be developed:
. Survey of the Douro region and Greater Porto society, with particular attention paid to the elites detaining local power and their socio-professional characterisation, following a prosopographic method;
. Detailed biographic study of the different personalities of the Douro Paladin movement, and thus highlight how its influence can still be felt in the Douro region today;
. Institutional analysis of the organisations and institutions linked to viticulture and the Port wine sector, in particular the Port Wine Institute and the Guild of Port Wine Exporters;
. Study the different social movements and riots that took place in the Douro region during the first half of the 19th century.
Accordingly, several perspectives of Contemporary Douro are to be developed, from a comprehensive, wide-ranging perspective, focussing particularly on issues left open in prior studies, but also seeking to suggest new paths for future research. The research team will conduct documental research in the different municipalities within the Douro region, as well as in Porto, Viseu, Guarda, Bragança, Vila Real and Lisbon. |
