In a globalised world, recovering from a pandemic crisis and immersed in a war with global repercussions, despite the threats and destruction to which our planet has been subjected, a multiplicity of ecosystems persists, albeit with a loss of biodiversity. Nevertheless, it is very common to find in these ecosystems a combination of dynamic and multifunctional territories, together with others in decline, where development and sustainability are at stake. In this context, in which climate change and human intervention are indelibly reflected, without forgetting the present war in Europe, awareness of these problems is growing and the need to intervene at different scales is emerging. Thus, strategies are being drafted that focus on inclusive development based not only on the conservation of landscapes and heritage, but also on the revitalisation of social frameworks. In this scenario, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, established by the UN and embodied in the "Agenda 2030", are of mandatory reference, representing imperative challenges in the current context that is still threatened by the pandemic and war in the European area with the unquestionable aggravation of inequalities.

The aim is to eradicate poverty while promoting equitable access to energy, education, and quality health services. Another area of focus is the creation of jobs and energy efficiency, in addition to the conservation and management of endogenous resources. The intention is also to promote effective institutions and stable societies, where justice, peace and health care, together with gender equality, are unequivocal and inclusive. To this end, policy convergence is required, where environmental and social strategies gain prominence over strictly economic ones, clearly guided by innovation and ethics, sustained by digital resources, and dedicated to increasing literacy and technical training. In this way, we will move towards greater territorial cohesion as the most effective way of overcoming the systemic and multifaceted crisis we have been experiencing.

It is therefore necessary to continue to reflect on these themes, without ignoring their complexity and territorial diversity, correlating the European space with others, highlighting interconnections with the Brazilian space, within the scope of which innovative projects have been carried out. Therefore, this collaborative link is deepened through the 17th International Conference on Overarching Issues of the European Area. The main objective, already evident in previous editions of this event, also persists: the approach to current problems, in a scientific, creative, multidisciplinary and interuniversity context, highlighting the search for strategies to mitigate these problems within a framework of sustainability and resilience.
