The course was approved by Despacho (Dispatch) No. 3371/2016, published in the Diário da República, 2nd series — No. 45 — 4 March 2016.
The course is accredited by the Board of Administration of the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education in its meeting of 26 May 2015, and registered by the Directorate-General for Higher Education under No. R/A-Cr 192/2015.
It is designed to train teachers of Portuguese for the 3rd cycle of Basic Education and for Secondary Education.

Objectives

The different components of the Master's programme aim to:

  • In terms of teaching and learning development, provide students with the scientific and methodological tools in the field of Portuguese that will enable them to promote quality teaching, ensuring meaningful learning.
  • at a professional, social and ethical level, to ensure that future teachers adapt to the specificities of the social and school contexts in which they work, while respecting the ethical and deontological requirements inherent to the teaching profession.
  • In terms of participation in school and community relations, to develop an understanding of teaching as a global and integrated activity.
  • In terms of lifelong professional development, make initial training the starting point for a journey based on reflection on educational issues and professional practice, with a view to building a training project that responds to the individual, institutional and social challenges facing education.

Employment Prospects

Per Decree-Law No. 79/2014 of 14 May, this Master's degree qualifies graduates to teach in recruitment group 300 of the Ministry of Education.

Admission requirements: 1st cycle degree or equivalent, plus

  • To access the Master's programme, as defined by Decree-Law No. 79/2014 of 14 May (amended by Decree-Law No. 176/2014 of 12 December), Article 17 is fulfilled, respecting the general entry conditions which stipulate that candidates undergo a written Portuguese language test and an oral interview to assess their command of spoken and written Portuguese and their mastery of the essential rules of logical and critical argumentation.
A Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 120 ECTS credits in Portuguese. (A student may still apply provided they hold a Bachelor's degree and have completed 75% of the minimum training requirements, i.e., 90 ECTS credits in Portuguese, and may complete the remaining 30 ECTS credits during the first year of the Master's programme.)
