The Master’s degree in English and Foreign Languages Teaching is a second cycle which seeks the acquisition of the necessary pedagogical and scientific skills for teaching in 3rd cycle of basic education and in secondary education, bearing in mind the transformations in society, education and in the technological and scientific evolution.
The Master’s degree is four semesters long (120 ECTS).

Objectives

The different training components of the Master’s degree seek:
  • To ensure that the future teacher adapts at a professional, social and ethical level, to the specificities of the social and school contexts he/she might be in, respecting the ethical and deontological demands of teaching;
  • As for the development of the teaching and learning processes, to provide the student with scientific and methodological instruments which may allow him/her to promote a quality teaching, capable of ensuring significant learnings.
  • As for school participation and the relationship with the community, to develop the understanding of teaching as a global and integrated activity.
  • Regarding a lifelong professional development, to make the initial training a starting point of a path grounded on the reflection about educational issues and professional practice, seeking the construction of a training project which may answer to individual, institutional or social challenges.

Employment Prospects

On completion of this Master’s degree, students will be qualified to teach in the following recruitment groups: English 330; and the chosen foreign language specialism: German 340; or Spanish 350; or French 320.

Applications calendar and number of vacancies
  Admission requirements:

To enter this master's programme, candidates must have a bachelor's degree with between 140 and 180 ECTS, distributed as follows:

  • In the main area of English, the degree must have between 80 and 100 ECTS, of which at least 36 ECTS must be in the English language and the remaining 44 ECTS in Literature, Culture and/or Linguistics;
  • In the specialised area of Foreign Language (German or Spanish or French), the degree must have between 60 and 80 ECTS, of which 36 ECTS must be in Foreign Language subjects and 24 ECTS in Literature, Culture and/or Linguistics.

For English and the Foreign Language specialism, candidates must provide evidence of academic qualifications at the following levels of linguistic competence based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: English C1, French C1, Spanish C1 and German B2.

Applications that do not meet the minimum ECTS requirements may be accepted provided that the candidate has at least 105 ECTS in the required areas (main language area of English 60 ECTS; specialised area of foreign language – Spanish, or French or German 45 ECTS). The remaining 35 ECTS must be acquired during the first year of the master's programme.

During the application process, the result of the Portuguese language test or the ENES exam result for Portuguese language obtained within the last 5 years must be presented. Further to this, candidates will be interviewed in the two language foreign languages of the application. Should the candidate demonstrate insufficient competence in these languages, the Scientific Committee may require an additional oral and written test.


Comments

Students may only sign up for the Initiation to Professional Practice subject after having been approved in subjects English Didactics I and II and German / Spanish / French Didactics I and II.
