The creation of a 3rd cycle of studies conducive to a PhD degree in History of Portuguese Art answers a depth and coherent education need in this branch of knowledge, an area which as been drawing a special attention from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto, through the Section of History of Art from the Department of Heritage Studies.
Based on a vast experience of PhD dissertation supervisions, the course seeks to frame the education of Doctors in History of Portuguese Art, who may aim a place in History of Art in the scientific context of the European university space.
On the other hand, the cycle of studies conducive to the PhD degree also answers an already implemented policy, of supervision of students from Brazilian universities, whose experience may be repeated with applicants to the PhD degree from other Portuguese-speaking countries.
Degree approved under Art. 54 of the Teaching Career Statute (Decree-Law no. 15/2007, of 19/01), regulated by Ordinance no. 334/2008, of 30/04, for the group 200 (Portuguese and Social Studies/History) and 400 (History). (Order of His Excellency the Secretary of State of Education, July 21st 2009)
