Objectives

The MA provides training that explores the political dimensions of Philosophy and Economics and the relationships between these fields. Philosophy focuses on ways of thinking and arguing, and has created and developed a long tradition of reflection on political action, notably on power, the state, the social contract, forms of government, justice, ethics, equity, coercion and violence. Economics is concerned with the creation and distribution of value, with the coordination (or uncoordination) of decentralized decisions in the context of scarcity, and with the institutional and political dimensions of these processes. This multidisciplinary training will broaden students' world view, providing them with the skills necessary to act reflexively, informed and innovatively within a changing world, particularly in the field of economic institutions and political systems, providing differentiated career paths.

Fields of Specialization

The MA offers training in broad areas of the social sciences and humanities, which intersect theoretical-practical and reflective approaches suitable for analyzing and dealing with complex socio-cultural, economic and political phenomena.

The collaboration between the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Economics corresponds to a priority and strategic orientation of the U.Porto of transversal knowledge construction and multidisciplinary training oriented towards scientific innovation, the development of skills and professional performance of high qualification, indispensable in global and rapidly changing societies.

The study plan aims at a transversal training for different scientific and professional profiles, enriched with the attendance of specialized options from other master's degrees.

Professional Abilities

Students should become capable of interpreting and using the methodologies and specialized terminology of the Master's scientific areas (Philosophy, Politics, Economics), recognizing problems, theories and arguments, and demonstrating the acquired knowledge and skills, namely through written works (essays, dissertations).

The proximity to the activities of the research units in Philosophy and Economics ensures students the possibility to qualify their training and their research in direct contact with experts and the discussion of current scientific and societal trends.
