O Mestrado em Estudos Alemães, com a duração de quatro semestres (com um total de 120 créditos ECTS), permite aos estudantes a frequência de uma de duas vias:
- Uma via nacional (‘Mestrado em Estudos Alemães’), lecionada exclusivamente na FLUP, com unidades letivas no primeiro ano, sendo o segundo ano dedicado à investigação conducente à elaboração de uma dissertação ou de um projeto e do respetivo relatório. No âmbito desse perfil, os estudantes frequentam u.c.s de cultura, língua, linguística e língua alemãs e podem especializar-se ou na área da cultura / literatura alemãs ou na área do ensino (não oficial) de alemão como língua estrangeira (Deutsch als Fremdsprache).
- An international study path (‘Mestrado em Estudos Alemães - Master in Transnational German Studies’), which is a joint degree course of four European universities with structured student mobility, taught in the first semester at the UP, in the second semester at the Université du Luxembourg (Luxembourg) , in the third semester at Johannes Gutenberg-Universtät Mainz (Germany), and in the fourth semester at Università degli Studi di Palermo (Italy). In the first three semesters of this international profile (the fourth semester is dedicated to the preparation of the dissertation), modules are taught in:
- German language and culture,
- German literature,
- Employability.
Objectives
The Mestrado em Estudos Alemães aims to achieve the following objectives:
- To develop the students’ skills in critical thinking and problematization in an interdisciplinary and transnational framework, thereby promoting academic creativity and cultural and social entrepreneurship;
- To promote the transversality of knowledge and skills through contrasting and converging critical perspectives, methodologies and conceptual and professional instruments;
- To encourage intercultural competences acquired within academic and social contexts, thereby sponsoring active citizenship, the promotion of civic competences and mutual understanding;
- To offer students integrated training in the specialization area of German Studies, through contact with different academic realities;
- To solidify and deepen the students’ knowledge of German language, literature and culture, thereby promoting their research capacity and their scientific interest in this area;
- To analyse the culture and literature of the German area in the European context, assessing the (diachronic and synchronic) processes of intercultural transfer that, from the very outset, underpinned the development of German culture and literature;
- To train a) professionals in the area of German (in the widest sense), b) specialists who participate in national and international teams and networks for the management and supervision of cultural and literary heritage in the context of German Studies, c) future teachers of German as a foreign language (Deutsch als Fremdsprache) in Portugal and abroad.
Employment Prospects
The career prospects for the course are:

Teaching German as a foreign language (Deutsch als Fremdsprache) in Portugal and abroad;

Working in German-speaking companies in Portugal and abroad, among others in those dedicated to translation and the management and the supervision of German cultural and literary heritage, such as associations, publishers, museums and other cultural bodies.

Applications calendar and number of vacancies
In the first application phase, applications to the Master’s Degree in German Studies (National Track and Joint Master in Transnational German Studies track) will be open to all applicants, both national and international, from 2 January 2026 to 6 February 2026. A second application phase, also open to all applicants, will take place from 9 February 2026 to 2 April 2026. A third application phase may be opened from 12 June 2026 to 22 July 2026, should places remain available after the first and second phases. At present, we are applying for additional funding from the European Commission. If the application is successful, Erasmus Mundus scholarships will be awarded (only for the Joint Master in Transnational German Studies track). However, scholarships under the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master programme may be fully allocated to students admitted in the first application phase, and availability for candidates in the second phase cannot be guaranteed.

The Master in German Studies-national study was approved under Art. 54 of the Teaching Career Statute, regulated by Ordinance number 334/2008, of 30/04, for the group: 340 (Order of April 22th, 2021).This degree enables those who are already in the teaching profession to advance in their career, but it is not a teaching qualification degree.
