Admission requirements
1. First degree in Romance Philology, Classical Philology or in Modern Languages and Literature (with Portuguese Studies, Portuguese and Spanish Studies, Portuguese and French Studies, Portuguese and English Studies, Portuguese and German Studies), and Classical Languages and Literature with Portuguese and Latin Studies, with the minimum final average grade of 14 (grading scale of 0-20).
2. Applicants may also hold a degree mentioned in 1. with a final average grade lower than 14, as long as relevant experience and/or a professional or equivalent qualification is judged to be sufficient to undertake the programme.
3. First degree in other areas or a legally equivalent foreign degree, as long as relevant experience and/or a professional or equivalent qualification is judged to be sufficient to undertake the programme.

Course Description
Aims
This Masters course is primarily aimed at broadening students’ understanding of Portuguese poetry and fiction in the chronological period between Modernity and Post-modernity. Bearing these concepts in mind as benchmark categories, although they themselves are subject to discussion, it is the course’s aim to develop theoretical and critical reflection capable of providing an analytical view of the development of Literary Modernity in Portugal, as well as of the contemporary manifestations of a late modernity or “over-modernity”.
Target Public
With the aim of providing a comprehensive understanding of Modern and Contemporary Portuguese Literature, as well as the theoretical and methodological tools necessary for research in this field of study, the course is primarily intended for all those who wish to develop a professional activity related to Modern and Contemporary Portuguese Literature, both in teaching and in research or cultural mediation.
Structure
The course is organised into two integrated phases: a specialisation course, comprising four semestral seminars, and the 2nd year is dedicated to the preparation of a Masters dissertation. The title of Master is awarded after concluding and successfully defending the dissertation.

The Masters Degree in Modern and Contemporary Portuguese Literature qualifies the holder to exercise professional activities in the following fields:

  • Teaching of Portuguese language and literature in primary and secondary education;
