Master in Communication Sciences

Resulting from a partnership between the FACULTIES of ARTS, FINE ARTS, ECONOMY and ENGINEERING, the Master’s degree in Communication Sciences has the goals of providing their students:

  • a scientific and professional education, combining solid knowledge in Human and Social Sciences with new information and communication technologies and the aesthetic and creative dimensions;
  • further competences of analysis, production and creation of media and communication processes.

The Masters is structured in two areas – Media and Journalism and Strategic Communication – adopting a four-semester syllabus, worth 120 ECTS:

  • 60 ECTS of a teaching/learning, where the student will choose one of the two available areas, in which he/she will be able to opt for certain subjects worth 6 ECTS in any scientific area at the U.Porto, to complement their training according to his/her own interests and competences;
  • On the third semester, the student will opt for a Professional Specialization (which requires the accomplishment of an internship and an internship report) or Research (which requires the accomplishment of a dissertation). Both options will extend to the 4th semester, fulfilling the remaining 60 ECTS.

Employment Prospects

MECC graduates have the skills to perform functions in Communication Sciences’ area, notably in journalism (press, radio, television and Internet), strategic communication (business, institutional and organizational communication, political communication, crisis communication, consultancy and relations public institutions), research (scientific production) and teaching.

According to the area of activity and alternative trajectory (internship or dissertation/project), MECC graduates can work as journalists in newsrooms of communication vehicles, advisors in agencies and communications offices (of companies, associations, public bodies, parties, unions and other institutions and organizations), researchers in R&D units, and teachers in educational establishments.

  Admission requirements:
  • Holders of a bachelor's degree or legal equivalent;
  • Holders of a foreign higher academic degree awarded following a 1st cycle of studies organised in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Process by a State adhering to this Process;
  • Holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognised as satisfying the objectives of a bachelor's degree by the statutorily competent scientific body of the higher education establishment to which they wish to be admitted;
  • Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognised as attesting to their ability to complete this cycle of studies by the statutorily competent scientific body of the higher education establishment to which they wish to be admitted.
