The Master's Degree in History and Heritage offers students the chance to deepen their general knowledge obtained in various degrees (History, Geography, Cultural Tourism, Art, Archaeology, Architecture, Communication Science, Information Science, Sociology, Anthropology...) with a vocation for studying and preserving heritage. It also welcomes professionals who want to deepen their knowledge and skills (tourism technicians, local authority management technicians, archive technicians, etc.).

 

Curricular structure

The Master's in History and Heritage is divided into 3 branches of specialisation: Local and Regional Studies - Construction of Memories, Heritage Mediation (with optional internship) and Historical Archives, in collaboration with the Master's in Information Science - FEUP (with compulsory internship). It offers a range of Curricular Units (CUs) in the areas of History, Information Science, Social Sciences, Geography, Museology and other areas in accordance with the choices of optional units at U.Porto.

The aim is for students to obtain skills in:
  • The use of methods and techniques essential for identifying, inventorying, disseminating and preserving heritage: natural, documentary, iconographic, built, archaeological, rural, maritime and industrial;
  • Organising projects for professional intervention in the areas of cultural entertainment and cultural and historical tourism;
  • Systemic, integrated and multidisciplinary management of heritage, whatever its nature, in order to enhance its preservation and enjoyment by the community.

Employment Prospects

Degree approved under Art. 54 of the Teaching Career Statute (Decree-Law no. 15/2007, of 19/01), regulated by Ordinance no. 334/2008, of 30/04, for the groups 200 (Portuguese and Social Studies / History) and 400 (History). (Order of His Excellency the Secretary of State of Education, July 21st 2009).

  Minimum number of students: 10 

Degree approved under Art. 54 of the Teaching Career Statute, regulated by Ordinance number 334/2008, of 30/04, for the groups: 200 and 400 (Order of July 13th, 2023).This degree enables those who are already in the teaching profession to advance in their career, but it is not a teaching qualification degree.
