Urban Transformation and Public Safety

The third edition of ERASMUS BIP ‘Urban Transformation and Public Safety’, offers the opportunity for students of four countries (Portugal, the Netherlands, Norway and Italy) to participate together in a one week training course (30 september to 4 october 2024), in an interdisciplinary and multicultural environment. The first edition occurred in 2022 in Roterdam and the second in 2023 in Bergen. It is now the turn of the University of Porto to be the host, with a new set of students.

Selected students will have the opportunity to learn different analysis tools that are related to urban planning and public safety and apply them on a real-life case in Porto, in groups constituted by elements of the different countries.

Masterclasses will focus themes related to Urban Transformation, Sustainability, Public Safety and Urban Management, namely in terms of the relationship between crime and urban space (Environmental Criminology, Criminology of Place, CPTED), and morphological analysis tools (Street profile analysis, Spacematrix, Mixed Use Index, Space Syntax). At the end of the week, students will present their findings and offer a reflection on the lessons learned with regards to their personal development as a future global professional.

Besides, the course includes field trips and social activities, supported by the organization. There is no enrollment fee; the students only need to be selected.
