The Master's degree in Linguistics at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto began in 1994. In 2007 it has been adapted to the Bologna Process, with two variants; In the school year 2013-14 it was decided to create a new plan of study for a master's degree in Linguistics, with a syllabus which partly corresponds to the General Language and Portuguese variant, but with some renovation that arises from the assessment made to the course and the current formative offer.  

The first and second semesters constitute the Specialization Course in Linguistics; the degree is obtained at the end of the second year, with the defense of an original dissertation. The syllabus contains a 1st semester with five obligatory CU, which correspond to the central areas of Linguistic. In the second semester there are several options, in order to allow the students to build a personal profile.

Objectives

  • To develop methodological skills, important in any scientific domain and in Linguistics in particular: the capacity of observation and analysis of linguistic data, of establishment of relations and general rules, as well as the development of the capacities of synthesis and critical reflection;
  • to specialize the students in several areas of Linguistics, in order to develop research in this area;
  • to provide advanced knowledge in several areas of Linguistics, in order to enable students to perform different professional activities related to language and languages.

General and Portuguese Linguistics.

Professional Abilities

A master in Linguistics should be able to develop research about the Portuguese Language and other languages in several plans; to develop skills that should allow to make language consultancy, to collaborate in the elaboration of dictionaries, in translation, revision and text edition, to collaborate in projects, as well as to produce, individually or in teams, adequate materials for language teaching and to intervene in teacher training.


Employment Prospects

Besides the preparation of future researchers in Linguistics and the participation in national and international projects, as well as scientific events, we must refer language teachers formation, collaboration with publishers who need personnel trained for the development of resources for creating and revising dictionaries, grammars and teaching manuals; institutions interested in areas such as forensic linguistics and many other possible applications of knowledge in Linguistics.

  Admission requirements: graduate degree or equivalent 
  Selection criteria: applicants for registration in the course will be selected by its Scientific Commission, bearing in mind the following criteria:
  • academic curriculum
  • scientific curriculum
  • professional curriculum
  • interview.

NOTE: applicants may be submitted to academic selection tests for assessment of their levels of knowledge in the scientific of the course. The decisions of the Scientific Commission about the selection of applicants cannot be appealed, except when invalid for formal reasons.



Degree approved under Art. 54 of the Teaching Career Statute, regulated by Ordinance number 334/2008, of 30/04, for the groups: 200, 210, 300, 320, 330, 340 and 350 (Order of July 13th, 2023).This degree enables those who are already in the teaching profession to advance in their career, but it is not a teaching qualification degree.
