The graduate degree in Language Sciences:
  • Promotes a solid scientific education in its area, complemented by knowledge and subsidiary competences, as well as the possibility of organizing its own path through selected optional subjects;
  • It is both centred in classic fundamental research objects in General and Theoretical Linguistics, as well as in Language-applied research, with a particular focus on the Portuguese Language;
  • Has a THREE YEAR-length and it presents two alternative education paths: Linguistics and Portuguese as a foreign language.

The Language Sciences course’s object of study is:

Objectives

The main scientific goals of the Language Sciences degree are:
  • To describe grammar properties in natural languages;
  • To apprehend the acquisition of mother and non-mother languages (L1 and L2);
  • To characterize oral and written language processing;
  • To study linguistic development disturbances;
  • To analyse linguistic variation in time, space and in society.

Professional Abilities

The Language Sciences degree seeks to develop the following general competences:
  • Linguistics variant
    • To solve problems in areas such as phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics, based on specific linguistic methods and techniques;
    • To be able to elaborate a research work and to present it, using general exposition and argument principles in Linguistics;
    • To acquire basic linguistic knowledge which may allow the contact with other applied areas, in which Linguistics might be an important research and/or application auxiliary, such as, for instance, computational applications, issues regarding cognitive knowledge, publishing and text edition.
  • Portuguese as a non-mother language variant
    • To apply fundamental Linguistics/ Language Sciences knowledge to activities regarding the Portuguese language;
    • To acquire an updated education in Language Sciences in order to know how to regulate the use of communication language as an essential part of human nature;
    • To relate a depth knowledge on the Portuguese language with a broader knowledge of the cultural, literary, historical and geographical contexts;
    • To achieve a Masters in Portuguese so as to come to teach it to other language speakers (mother and foreign languages) or to exercise activities regarding Portuguese consulting in L2 Portuguese environments.

The Linguistics variant, provides education for:
  • Integration in multidisciplinary research groups;
  • Access to post-graduate degrees;
  • Computational Linguistics;
  • Clinical Linguistics;
  • Lexicography and Terminology (namely cooperation in dictionary production);
