The Master’s degree in Sociology seeks the updating, the deepening and the specialization of scientific knowledge in Sociology. The goals are sociologists’ preparation, the quality of technicians, experts, boards, researchers or teachers, with a high sustained scientific education in order to be qualified professionals. The Master’s degree trains students to proceed their studies through a PhD (3rd cycle of studies).

The Masters in Sociology is intended to graduates in Sociology and in other scientific areas who seek to increase, deepen and develop their professional knowledge and skills.


Employment Prospects

The Masters in Sociology can develop professional activities which embody the application of sociologic knowledge, for instance, in the following domains:
  • Companies and other organizations (professional training, work organization, people management, organizational development, quality management);
  • municipalities (local and regional planning and development, local entertainment, urban rehabilitation);
  • culture and communication (cultural entertainment, cultural heritage management, organizational communication, marketing and advertisement);
  • public administration (teaching and healthcare policies, social inclusion, employment and professional training policies, economic and social development programs);
  • social solidarity and development institutions (professional training, social inclusion, local and regional economic and social development);
  • education and research (teaching, professional training, scientific research in research centres or study offices).

  Minimum number of students: 10
  Admission requirements: students holding the following qualifications will be admitted to application to the cycle of studies conducive to the Master’s degree in Sociology:
  • Holders of a graduate degree (180 ECTS) or legal equivalent;
  • Holders of a foreign higher academic degree given in the sequence of a 1st cycle of studies organized according to the Bologna Program in any adherent country;
  • Holders of a foreign higher academic degree recognized as adequate by the competent council of the Faculty of Arts;
  • Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognized as adequate by the competent scientific council of the Faculty of Arts.



Comments

Important:
According to University of Porto’s rules, the graduates in Sociology with a five-year degree, prior to the Bologna Program, may submit the set of credits acquired during their education to assessment, so as to redefine the necessary credits to obtain a Master’s degree in Sociology in the Faculty of Arts.
