Bachelor in History

Description: The fundamental goal of the 1st cycle degree in History, ministered by the Department of History, Political and International Studies (DHEPI), is to provide a solid education in the History domain, in four academic areas:

  • History - Knowledge
  • History - Theory
  • History – Method
  • History – Applied research
The graduate in History shall be apt for teaching and researching, but also for an intervention in the world of communication sciences, tourism, heritage management and preservation, public relations, publishing, political thought, business or even the administration and local management universe. Thus, we will make available, throughout the degree, skills, instruments and techniques which transmit knowledge, alongside the competences which will allow them to intervene in cultural and social universes in an effective and professional way.

The course is 6 semesters-long and has a 180 ECTS crediting. These ones can be attended following one of three modalities:

  • Full training in History, an area that is structured in disciplinary groups (General History / History of Portugal/ Theory/ Methodology/ Applied research/ Problematics/ Free options); the attendance of a minimum credit number in each of these areas is planned in advance;
  • A graduate degree in History with minor in Geography (126 ECTS in History + 54 ECTS in Geography). Only the articulation between education in History with a minor in Geography will give access to the 2nd cycle in Teacher Training, as long as the credits are achieved; :
  • Basic training in the disciplinary area of History, complemented with a maximum of 5 subjects (30 ECTS) in one of the following areas taught by FLUP: :
    • Archaeology
    • History of Art
    • Philosophy
    • Geography
    • Sociology
    • Languages
    • Literature
    • Information Sciences

    • International Relations
The student can attend one or more scientific areas. The syllabus doesn’t foresee the linking of subjects to academic years, so that the student may build his/her curriculum in an articulate way and according to his/her own guidelines, as long as a minimum education within different areas is ensured.
