Bachelor in Applied Languages

Description:The graduate degree in Applied Languages has two different profiles: Translation and Business Relations. The first one is the adequacy of the Intercultural Communication and Translation variant into the former graduate degree in European Studies. In 2007/2008, a provisional plan was elaborated, in order to allow students’ integration in the new education system with no harm done to the normal functioning of the course.

This offer of a graduate degree in Applied Languages will, on the one hand, answer the need to create a 1st cycle of academic education adapted to the Bologna Program, which not only will provide the students the capacity to solve problems from several contact situations in different cultures and the adaptation to different cultures and languages, but which may also ensure the growing need of an adequate expression capacity, at a general language level.
Hence, the 1st cycle in Applied Languages, with a major in Translation, will provide an essential education, to be continued in specialized studies in the Translation area in a 2nd cycle. We can, therefore, achieve our old wish of a complete professional education in this area.

On the other hand, the 1st cycle in Applied Languages also intends to answer the emerging requests in FLUP’s geographical, economical, social and cultural background, through the creation of a second education profile in Applied Languages applied to Business Relations. Such profile seeks to fulfil an education need that FLUP has not achieved so far. By providing good bases in two living foreign languages, in management as in culture studies, Applied Languages to Business Relations presents itself as a multidisciplinary education with propaedeutic matters, which provides a future professionalization in the services area, as well as in management or cultural industries.

Having the conscience that a linguistic competence implies a multilingual and multicultural competence, we seek to reinforce a multilingual communication component and to stimulate an intercultural communicative capacity, which may contribute to a better understanding of the problems and needs of a contemporary world characterized by complex and multicultural societies.

Therefore, the graduate degree in Applied Languages’ main goal is to offer an initial education in linguistic and cultural domains, under two profiles – Translation and Applied Languages to Business Relations, bearing in mind regional development strategies and its needs.

It is, thus, about planning and putting to practice a new degree with a more flexible and diversified offer, destined to students who are interested in the study of languages, looking for the acquisition of basic and fundamental competences in translation, intercultural communication and management and which prepares students for specialization courses in these areas, at a 2nd cycle level.
