Content and Language Integrated Learning

MEBI001 - ECTS
  1. To develop an understanding of primary education, its role in child development and the competences required of teachers;
  2. To examine the phenomenon of early foreign language learning (namely English) in the global context and how this manifests itself in the national context;
  3. To develop an understanding of the key concepts of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and its practical application in primary contexts.

Child Development

MEBI002 - ECTS 1. Characterize the socio-historical phenomena underlying the childhood emergence as a specific period of human development.
2. Framing the psychological development as a contextual process.
3. Describe and compare the main theories of cognitive, psychosocial and emotional development  more relevant  for child education and teaching.
4. Analyze the influence of significant actors in the process of adaptation, behavior and school performance.
5. Define and contrast self-concept, self-efficacy, and self-esteem and analyze their influence on the teaching-learning process.
6. Describethe proper procedures of classroom management to prevent indiscipline and promote a climate of learning
7. Develop skills of oral and written expression.

Didactics of English

Cultural and Intercultural Dynamics for Teachng English in the 1st Cycle

MEBI003 - ECTS

The C.U. aims to raise awareness among students of the importance of English language teaching for social cohesion in the context of a multicultural and multilingual Europe. The 1st part develops knowledge of background papers, draws attention to the need for a harmonious first contact of students with foreign languages, capitalizing on previous knowledge, and provides a reference to the varieties of English as a focus of discussion on cultural diversity.

The 2nd part promotes reflection on structuring concepts of intercultural education and skills that students should acquire (and later promote) to be intercultural citizens (e.g. awareness of the existence of the Other, tolerance and empathy, ability to discover and interact, reflect and evaluate critically).

The 3rd part stresses the importance of collaborative learning (as a form of respect for the perspectives of the Other) for the analysis of existing materials for intercultural education and creating new material.

English C2.1

MTSL013 - ECTS

Learning objectives of the curricular unit: 
* Demonstrating a greater understanding of grammar at text & extended discourse level;
* Reading, understanding and working autonomously with a wide range of texts;
* Identifying different registers and genres\
* Explaining and summarizing texts. * Deducing & discussing effectively a writer's or speaker’s intended purpose & meaning, effectiveness of grammatical structures used, overall efficacy of the text under scrutiny;
* Demonstrating a broader knowledge of the English-speaking world e.g. socio-cultural knowledge, appreciation of cultural diversity, etc

Educational Policies and Curriculum

MEH014 - ECTS

The course unit, by introducing an holistic perspective on the Portuguese education system, aims to critically reflect on the teaching and learning process and provide future teachers with the ability to the scientifically and pedagogically rationalize, systematize and steer their activities.

Future teachers need a consistent theoretical basis that enables them to develop research on the educational field, where many black boxes persist.

The programme aims to introduce reflection on several themes, such as the construction of modern educational systems, the current political debates on education and their unmeasured social, technical and economic impact, impact the organization of school institutions, the prescriptive and theoretical curriculum, the status and role of the student nowadays and the teacher professionalism. The approach to these themes intends to identify the main lines of the evolution of the Portuguese educational system.

The subject’s main goals are:

- to analyze the historical and political process of construction of contemporary educational systems;

- to understand the diversity of models and variables in school organization and management and their impact on the quality of educational practices;

- to analyze the diversity of orientations in curriculum theory and development and their impact on professional practices and learning outcomes;

- to identify the curriculum components (objectives/competences, contents, strategies and evaluation) in their relevance for the efficacy of the real curriculum.

- to understand the processes, contents, skills and means to foster teachers’ professionalism;

- to develop attitudes of reflection and scientific research.

 

Didactics of English for Young Learners

MEBI004 - ECTS
Main objectives are:

1. to understand what it means to be a teacher of young learners;
2. to develop understanding of key concepts and theories underlying approaches and methods of teaching foreign languages young learners;
3. to develop competences for the practical application of the above.

Supervised Teaching Practice I

MEBI006 - ECTS
  1. To develop understanding of the primary school context and the competences required of teachers through direct observation of practices;
  2. To develop student-teacher's ability to be a reflective practitioner;
  3. To develop competences for classroom observation;
  4. To develop abilty to problematise teaching;
  5. To understand practitioner research and engage in the intial stages of the research process;
  6. To develop competences for planning and giving lessons.


Educational Research

MEG013 - ECTS
  1. Identify the stages of scientific research
  2. Identify a variety of research methods used in the field of education
  3. Provide a development of skills that allow the student to critically analyze research work in the field of education

English Literature in Childhood

MEBI005 - ECTS Students are supposed to acquire the knowledge of subject matters specified in the syllabus, as far as the historical and cultural contextualization of English children's literature is concerned. Besides, they should also develop  understandingof the particularities of children's imaginative universe, of their psychological and educational needs, in order to be fully apt to approach them with an appropriate attitude and open critical spirit. The thoroughwork of critical analysis developed within the scope seminars of a choice of both literary and critical texts will enhance students' abilities to teach children with a broader critical mind and a more conscious understanding of the role played by literature and reading in society from the very early stages of childhood. 

 

 

Psycholinguistics and the Teaching of Languages

MEPLAT004 - ECTS

To develop students’ critical reasoning so that they can attain better skills as teachers of Portuguese, based on the topics dealt with during the seminar sessions.

MEBI007 - ECTS 1. To develop competences to plan units of work and teach autonomously;
2. To develop competences for the design of tasks and materials for young learners;
3. To develop reflexivity in relation to developing teaching competences;
4. To develop the ability to theorise one's own practice;
5. To contribute to critical discussion on the work of colleagues;
6. To be able to conduct small-scale action research;
7. To be able to disseminate the outcomes of action research;
8. To demonstrate the ability to write an academic report of their action research.
