Logótipo ILCML

The Margarida Losa´s Institute for Comparative Literature (ILCML) has as its main goals:

  1. To develop scientific research in the field of Literary Studies, more specifically in the field of Comparative Literature, focusing on its intersections with cultural studies, interarts studies and gender studies, privileging interlinguistic, intercultural and interdisciplinary perspectives. The research thematic axes at the ILCML, as well as the research projects associated with it, are integrated into the above-mentioned areas;
  2. To support the teaching of different aspects of Comparative Literature, and, in general, of Literature and Culture at FLUP, by participating in the research underlying the preparation of programs suited to the scientific and pedagogical requirements of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles, in a multicultural and interlinguistic perspective of literary and cultural phenomena;
  3. To promote cultural and scientific exchange with similar national and international institutions, with particular emphasis on other Research Centres in the field of Comparative Literature, as well as with centres in other areas of knowledge;
  4. To articulate its scientific research with an intercultural and interdisciplinary dynamization within the civil society;
  5. To create and collaborate in national and international scientific research projects that contribute to the promotion of research in the scientific areas of the ILCML.
Description:
Although formally created in 1985, the Institute for Comparative Literature only started a regular research activity in 1997, thanks to Margarida Losa’s commitment (1945-1999).
The work carried out by the Institute for Comparative Literature (ILCML) has been guided by the search of scientific excellence associated with social relevance, by exploring the creative potential to stimulate innovation and giving it an added value, which includes fundamental dimensions of human life for the formation and support of a critical mass for an inclusive and culturally advanced society. Grounded in a field of research and teaching of an interdisciplinary nature such as Comparative Literature, especially in its most current interdiscursive and interartistic developments, the ILC’s work covers and links different domains, which allows it to meet three essential pillars for university research and teaching: quality, relevance and innovation.

There are currently three main areas of research, organized into three research groups:
- Inter/Transculturalities
- InterSexualities
- InterMedialities
