Objectives

Acquisition of the necessary information to understand the political environment that marked Portuguese history between the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of Modern Period.

3. From local and regional descriptions to a general description of the kingdom (1597).
4. Frontiers and politics.
5. The administrative organization of the metropolitan and overseas areas.
6. Royal centralisation and the unifying political structures.
7. Major trends in Portuguese politics during the reigns of D. João II and D. Sebastião.
8. The judicial issue in the dynastic crisis.
9. Portugal under Spanish rule.
10. Philip II of Spain, King of Portugal.
11. 1640 – Restoration policies.
12. Absolute power and the central powers - Government and public administration.
13. The policies of Pombal.
14. The reign of D. Maria I.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical-practical classes. In classes of a more practical tenor, students are requested to present submitted assignments for class discussion.

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Eligibility for exams

Class attendance.

Calculation formula of final grade

Average sum of the marks obtained in the first part of the final exam (30 multiple choice questions) and the second part comprising a compulsory essay question. The mark of the practical assignment may also count towards the final mark.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Students may submit an assignment on a topic to be decided with the lecturer. (optional)
