Objectives

This subject will seek to analyse the relationship between the right to education and Human Rights, as the fundamental focal point for reflection on education as a social and human right. Consequently, and bearing in mind the challenges faced by education in the 21st century, students will also be encouraged to reflect on the tensions faced by contemporary societies, as well as on the notion of educational society and building citizenship

1. Cultural models of contemporary education.
1.1. The Greek model
1.2. The Judaeo-Christian model
1.3. The liberal model

2. Education, Society and Values:
2.1. Education and democracy: facts and ideals in education and in democracy.
2.1.1. Education as an anthropological universal.
2.1.2. Democracy as a value.
2.2. The ethical dimension of socio-political reality: the central reference of human rights.
2.3. Education: a social and human right.
2.3.1 To educate for human rights
2.4. The institutionalisation of education: school as a place for human education.
2.4.1 Emile Durkheim - enhancing the school’s function within society and in educating the individual
2.4.2 Ivan Illich - the ideal of a deschooled society.
2.4.3 Pierre Bourdieu and Jean-Claude Passeron - a general theory of the conditions for dissimulating violent symbolical actions

3. Building citizenship.
3.1 Between universal and particular: the contingency.
3.2 Individualism, autonomy and participation.
3.3 The challenges faced by education in the 21st century.
3.3.1 The economic, political and social tensions in the contemporary world.
3.3.2 From information society to educational society.
3.3.3 Reconfiguration of the teacher’s role in contemporary society.
