Objectives

To acquire elementary training in the rural component of territories.

Program

1. Introduction: Rurality. From the material production to the immaterial consumption.

2. Productive systems and lifestyles in the Old World.
2.1. Northern Europe and the Mediterranean basin.
2.2. The Asia of the Monsoons
2.3. Sub-Saharan Africa
2.4. Pre-Columbian America.

3. Expansion of the cultivated area and crisis in the Middle Ages.
3.1. Land lordship (land ownership and usage relationships)
3.2. Innovations (coupling, triennial rotation, new instruments)
3.3. From direct agricultural consumption to the influence of consumption on production.

4. The territories of rurality in the Modern World
4.1. Property regime in Europe’s Old Regime.
4.2. Land rent, monetary circulation and subsistence crises.
4.3. The genesis of the world market for agricultural products and the diversification of cultures.

.5. 18th-century modernization and the loss of agricultural centrality in the economy.
5.1. Transportation revolution and the road towards the end of autarchy.
5.2. International competition, protectionism periods and free-trade, lowering of prices and associativism of agricultural producers.
5.3. State regulation, scientific research and agricultural promotion: agricultural machines, chemical fertilizers and expansion of cultivation areas.

6. Productivist policies and the crisis of peasant agriculture
6.1. The "New Deal", intensification, rationalization, mechanization and the formation of agricultural - industrial complexes.

7. The new challenges of rurality.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical classes: lectures where students are encouraged to participate, creating a learning/teaching relationship between students and teacher. Resource to audiovisual aids.

Practical classes: Exposition of contents, followed by their application in group.

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Eligibility for exams

A final mark of 9.5 (theoretical and practical components)

Calculation formula of final grade

Evaluation will result from the adding of final evaluation and a compulsory practical research work in groups comprising four to five students.
The final average mark will be established from the theoretical component (70%) and the practical component (30%).

Examinations or Special Assignments

Compulsory group practical research work, consisting in the analysis of the major aspects that characterize the rural areas within a territorial unit (NUTIII in Portugal), each group comprising 4 to 5 students. The research should focus the analysis of statistic data published in the 1999 R.G.A by I.N.E.
